Hamburg, the second largest city in Germany, is a major transport hub in Northern Germany and is one of the most affluent cities in Europe. It is also very popular with tourists who flock here at the first opportunity.

St. Michaelis, or Michel as it is popularly known, is one of the major tourist attractions of this city. It is one of the five Protestant churches of Germany. Its architecture is a fresh change from that of the old churches. Its baroque style spire, the large bronze statue of Archangel Michael to whom the church is dedicated all show remarkable craftsmanship.

The original building was built in 1647, but since then the church has been reconstructed twice. In 1750, it was destroyed by a lightning strike. It was refurbished at that time. Then in the 20^th century it caught fire and was almost destroyed. After its reconstruction it once again suffered severe damages in the bombings of 1944 and 1945.

However after its reconstruction of 1983 the church once again looked brand new. Its 132 meter tall spire, roof everything was reconstructed.

Its architecture is so remarkable that around 9 replicas have been made in different parts of the world. Its size is so large that it can accommodate 2500 people and its spire is so tall that it offers breathtaking vies of the city!

If you ever visit Hamburg, you must go to this church! If not for the peace you’ll get, go for the amazing views.

The Hamburger Dom is a large carnival held at Heiligengeistfeld fair ground, in Hamburg. It is probably the longest fair in Germany since it consists of three parts being held in spring, summer and winter each. For all those adventurous people who love thrilling rides, funfair games and just the glamour and lights of a carnival, the Dom is the perfect place to be.

It attracts the largest number of tourists in the whole of Germany. The winter festival is called the Winterdom or Dommarkt, the summer festival is called Sommerdom or Hummelfest and the spring festival is called the Frühlingsdom.

The fireworks seen here are one of the major attractions. This fantastic display of lights in the sky is a sight to behold and will leave you speechless. It takes place every Friday evening at 11:30 P.M.

If you are planning to treat your family with a visit to this funfair, the best day would be Wednesday. This is the day when the entire park is designed for families. It includes acrobats, jugglers, fire-eaters, clowns, balloon men even Easter bunnies for the entertainment of your kids. The delight of your kids upon laying eyes on these artists will be enough to make you happy.

The transport to the Dom is also extremely easily available. If you do not wish to drive out this far, you can simply travel by the HVV bus or train. The Dom has its very own station for both. A few bus lines that will lead you to the Dom are bus line 9, Station Feldstraße or bus line 112, 36 and 37, Station St. Pauli.

If you are visiting Germany during the time of this Dom do not make the mistake of returning home without coming here even once. It’s so extravagant that you may even compare its glory to a Disneyland!

Right in the heart of Hamburg, there are a lot of green spaces which not only add to the scenic beauty of the city but also provide lot of opportunities for recreation, outdoor activities and family bonding. Hamburg’s Hayns Park, City Park (Stadtpark) and Volkspark Altona are known for sunbathing, picnicking, cycling, jogging and even boating. Some of the choicest parks and gardens in Hamburg are:

Planten un Blomen

the name of this garden draws inspiration from the old Hamburg vernacular for ‘plants and flowers’. The garden has a varied range of flora and is best known for its Japanese garden and the spectacular water show, which combines both light and music, and is held in the evenings. The park draws visitors especially in summer when a lot of recreational activities are held. Also lying within the park is an adventure playground for the kids. From May to September, the park is open daily from 07:00 to 23:00 and from October to April, it is open daily from 07:00 to 20:00.

Arboretum

A true paradise for green lovers, this park lies on the north-western outskirts of Hamburg. The landscaped gardens have summer flower borders, the bamboo walkways, a wide variety of flora and the children’s play area. The admission is without charge and is open daily from 09:00 to 19:00.

Klein Flottbek Botanical Gardens (Botanischer Garten Klein Flottbek)

The Klein Flottbek Botanical Gardens lies near Central Hamburg and features many exotic plants. The garden spans to a wide area of more than 50 acres / 20 hectares of themed gardens, featuring include walking trails, seating areas, picnic spots and various events, such as regular talks and workshops. The admission is for free daily from 09:00 to dusk.

Hayns Park

Standing close to a number of local neighbourhoods within the Eppendorf area of Hamburg, this is a popular recreational spot with a boating lake, which is especially popular with local canoeist, a number of eating joints, lawned areas, and walking trails suitable for jogging.

Hamburg, lying on River Elbe, is said to be one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. The city is known for its various attractions like Elbe, Alster, HafenCity (Harbour City), Speicherstadt (Warehouse City), the Fish Market and the Reeperbahn. Tierpark Hagenbeck
The park has animals like giraffe, monkeys, tigers and many live in their natural habitat conditions. Tourists love to feed the elephants here in their outdoor enclosure – but only with fruit and vegetables or special food bought from the souvenir shop at the entrance gate to the Zoo. The site also has a newly built Aquarium which hosts life forms from the deepest tropical oceans.

Planten un Blomen
located within the heart of the city, it features a botanical garden, tropical green house and the biggest Japanese garden in Europe. The lake in the park also displays musical fountain. From May to September water games take place here by day and in the evening there are coloured illuminated fountain concerts.

City Park
The city park is a favourite choice for football games, a picnic, a sunbathe or to have a trip on the Park Lake in a pedal or a rowing boat. The City Park also has an Open-air concert “hall” with many international artists and bands performing there. The park also has one of the oldest Planetariums in the world.

Ohlsdorfer Friedhof (Ohlsdorf Cemetery)
Stretched at a span of 405 hectares, Ohlsdorfer Cemetary is the main cemetery of Hamburg and also the second largest in the world after Chicago. From here you can also visit the nearby Hamburgian “park” which has numerous ponds and old trees to offer.
